Innovative Artistry: Wang Chongxue’s ‘Transparency’ Technique
After nearly twenty painstaking years refining his practice, Wang developed an entirely new artistic language – the technique of “transparency” which subtly combines three kinds of postmodern concepts: mechanical reproduction, collage, and appropriation. The brilliance of Wang lies in his application of a highly contemporary technique of “transparency” to revive traditional Chinese visual imagery in the contemporary cultural context of mass consumption.
Layered Symbolism: The Artistic Journey in ‘Transparent’ Series
In the “Transparent” series, Wang makes reference to The Night Revels of Han Xizai, by the Southern Tang painter Gu Hongzhong of the Five Dynasties (907-960A.D.). Birds and flowers have become necessary symbols in Wang’s works. These motifs either appear on the surface of the painting or intersect with the subjects, partly concealing scenes of merriment. Within the complex web, viewers are forced to observe and look conscientiously at the layers of images that were woven into the painting to vaguely see the “floating world” once existed.
Marking Time in the Dots: The Unwavering Dedication
The central imagery of his painting is slowly formed through the layering of thousands of “dots” over the years. In that regard, each “dot” marks a point in a certain time. The visual imagery captures time and the attendant experience entrapped within – the emotions, state of being, the painter’s touch. More importantly, the “dots” are also marks of the labour, focus, and determination of Wang, intricately intersecting his moments of inspiration and loneliness. Among the different techniques of painting, Wang has developed his style using “dots”, which may seem like a foolish choice. Yet behind the laborious technique and practice is a relentless single-mindedness and a belief to never compromise oneself in favour of trends.
