Leo Liu Xuanqi – Artistic Exploration of Cultural Fusion: Embracing East and West to Define Personal Identity
Leo Liu Xuan Qi (born in 1977) is a Chinese contemporary artist currently residing in Singapore. He moved to Singapore in 2006 and left his decade-long career as an art director in design and advertising in 2009 to pursue art full-time. As an overseas Chinese, he is well-exposed to the cultural nuances of the East and West. Since 2009, he has been exploring and reflecting on his personal identity amid contemporary culture.
Accolades and Recognition
Leo Liu Xuan Qi’s works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, the United States, and have been well-received. He was awarded the Platinum Award at the 31st UOB Singapore Painting of the Year Competition. Between 2012 to 2014, he was also selected as one of the finalists of the Dr. Tan Tsze Chor Award.
Exhibition and Fair Participation
Since 2010, Leo Liu Xuan Qi has held eight solo exhibitions and participated in many international art fairs, such as Art Stage Singapore, Art Taipei, Hong Kong Art Central, etc. His works are collected by private collectors and public institutions.
Cultural Exposure
From the traditions of Chinese ink painting, he tapped into associated icons and imagery, while integrating them with contemporary design elements, thus blending the cultural essence of the East and West. From then, he began developing his own distinctive style and practice.
Fusion of Tradition and Contemporary
Since 2012, Leo began fusing modern graphic design elements with traditional painting techniques, achieving a sense of contrast between dynamic design and still realism. His play on dualism and dialectics inspires reflection on the interaction between tradition and the contemporary within this rapidly evolving world.
Exploring Dualism
From 2014, Leo Liu Xuan Qi began to explore the use of contemporary aesthetics to present traditional Chinese ink painting, introducing traditional Chinese ink elements to installations, and achieving new breakthroughs in style and artistic expression. With his unique language, Leo continues to explore art through his distinctive style, incorporating traditional media and design elements of the East and West.
