陈楚智1942年出生于中国广东汕头，1955年来到新加坡。毕业于南洋美专，师从刘抗、钟泗滨、张荔英、赖凤美等新加坡先驱艺术家。1976年起成为全职画家，曾在中央美术学院深造，并持续创作超过40年。陈楚智从80年代至今举办过数次个人画展和联展，并在俄罗斯、德国、英国、法国、日本、韩国、印度尼西亚、马来西亚、中国台湾、中国香港等国家和地区举办过画展。陈楚智也曾多次获得重量级奖项，2006年获得由新加坡总统亲自颁发的新加坡艺术界最高荣誉——文化奖。

陈楚智的创作灵感来自于旅行和文化体验，展现了丰富的艺术表达力和独特的视觉语言。他的作品以描绘街景和静物的印象派风格油画而闻名，这些作品承载着新加坡的历史记忆，在一代人中引起强烈共鸣。陈楚智的油画以多层次大胆的色彩堆叠参差，映射出建筑与周围环境的斑驳沧桑，带出海峡殖民地城市的历史感。他注重情感深度，通过既富有动感又宽广的笔触和对色调、颜色及平衡的敏锐感受，探索现代主义静物画的可能性。
