1914年生于中国，1997年逝于新加坡，曾就读于杭州国立艺专绘画科，1937年毕业，并于1940年毕业于国立艺专西洋画系。
毕业后，他移居新加坡，自1948年至1977年在公教中学教授美术和华文。
他是新加坡重要团体展览的常客，也是新加坡中华美术研究会的活跃成员。
此外，他还参与了1960至1970年代与“十人画会”在东南亚地区的艺术巡游活动。
许铁生与赵无极是同学也是挚友，两人的深厚友情源于共同的求学经历和对艺术的执着热爱。
自1968年起，许铁生完全专注于木雕创作。他认为自己的雕塑具有东方风格，即传递真实感，表现普通人在日常劳动中的勤勉生活。
他的创作纯粹，旨在再现现实生活世界，使他的作品成为艺术与生活最接近的交汇点。
